Two people were seated in a chariot near the centre of a major fighting field in northern central India a couple of thousands of years back. The yogi Arjunawas one of them, who knew that it would not be long before conflict broke out. He demanded Krishna (Master of Yoga) what he should think about and how he would think about the moment. He also demanded Krishna the master of Yoga (Yogeshwara), what he should do.
In the end, it was difficult to find empty words. Krishna taught Arjuna what it takes to live a fully-fledged life that is self-knowledgeful and self-mastery in a short talk.
It was a battle that was fierce and all lost. Vyasa's epic poem The Mahabharata (The Great Indian War) was composed by Vyasa. He turned Krishna's inspirational teachings into to be a valuable jewel. They were immediately extracted , and were renamed Bhagavad Gita ("The Song of God") and was widely circulated throughout the subcontinent.
It was a long time ago. Nowadays the Gita can be present in nearly every Indian household and has been translated into the major languages across the globe. Literally billions upon thousands of copies were printed and handwritten. A few years ago, a South African spiritual organization printed one million copies of the book to distribute it for free. Rudyard Kipling was made a Freemason of Lahore when four of his scriptures were set in the temple.
Why is the Gita so appealing? It is practical and free of any abstract or ambiguous thought. My first visit to India was nearly 40 years ago. I came across Yogis who lived in a small houseboat along the GangesRiver in Benares (Varanasi). He didn't speak or write, but people would come to him with questions for many years. What did he do? He had a copy the Bhagavad Gita. After being asked the question or issue then he would open the book and then point to a specific section, presenting the questioner with an all-inclusive and complete solution.
My spiritual awakening started with taking me away from my comfortable religion and into a brand new world full of realities that I didn't know how to face. I struggled to navigate the new reality until I bought a paperback copy of the Bhagavadgita. I didn't even read it. I took it in. I wasn't reading words from a long-dead teacher, my Self was talking into me with the words of the book. I also did not learn anything from Gita-I apart from what I already knew. Eternal Self spoke Eternal Truth. My life was transformed thanks to the Bhagavad Gita, which brought me the gift of life that never ceases.
There was never an issue I've faced that Gita did not explain or enabled me to address or comprehend. It's not in any way dogmatic. Krishna spoke to Arjuna at the end "Now, I have taught you the wisdomwhich is secret of secrets." It is worth taking time to think about it. "Then, act as you think is best." There are no threats and promises, nor coercion. The reader has the final say of the final outcome.
The Bhagavad Gita is a reminder that we can achieve a knowing beyond what it says. It teaches us how. It is recommended that you read through the Gita every day throughout your life.
